The Marennes-Oléron Bay is the first cupped oyster production site (35,000 tons/year). For more than 10 years, this species has suffered chronic mortality episodes. A research program has been developed since 1994 in association with the professional sector, in order to try and explain these mortalities. |

This study aims to assess the broodstock origin and cultural effects on oyster summer mortality rates. Three oyster batches, two originating from the Marennes-Oléron Bay, and one from the Normandy rearing area were deployed in March 2000 on the Ronce Perquis oyster bank, on experimental site since 1996. On bottom cultured oysters were monitored until January 2001. By the end of the experiment, the cumulative mortality ranged from 51 to 58 %. Following on initial mortality rate (8.8 % to 9.3 %), oyster batches showed a critical period early July. In 15 days, mortality rate reached 13.7 %. Over the rearing period, the oyster shell growth ranged between 8.9 g and 12.7 g. The somatic gain represented 0.44-0.48 g of dry meat weight. Spawning event occured in... |

This paper aims to establish a comprehensive Iist of exotic species introduced into Atlantic French waters over the last century as well as their origin, and the vectors involved in the process. At least 104 non indigenous species have been recorded in the Atlantic and Channel coastal wa ters. Among those species, only a few (Bonamia ostreae, Crepidula fornicata) have resulted in highly significant negative impacts and side-effects on the coastal activity. In contrast, the introduction of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas can be considered to be successful, sustaining a large industry counting more than 4,000 companies and 150,000 tons of yearly production. Over the last decade, French and European laws have strenghtened the controls over exotic... |

Oyster farming in France is a traditional activity. Each year, 60,000 tons of C. gigas are fattened before being sold. Present-day fattening techniques for improving oyster taste and colour and increasing the meat weight are not particularly reliable. To optimize the fattening process, large phytoplanktonic blooms were induced in ponds, then distributed in oyster ponds. Despite the variability of the autumn weather conditions, diatoms (Skeletonema costatum) have been successfully cultured in outdoor ponds. During neap tides (when no seawater replenishes the water in the oyster beds), between mid-October and mid-December 1996, the fattening index (the weight of the meat) was constant or increased by 10-15% when a supplement of algae of 380.000... |

Originating from the north eastern Asia, Crassostrea gigas is endemic to Japan, but has been introduced and translocated, mainly for aquaculture purpose, into several countries, almost worldwide (1). In North America, the species can be found from Southeast Alaska to Baja California, while in European waters the species is cultured from Norway to Portugal as well as in Mediterranean Sea (Fig.1) (2). Biological characteristics make it suitable for a wide range of environmental conditions, although it is usually found in coastal and estuarine areas within its natural range. Although highly variable, the invasiveness pattern of C. gigas has been demonstrated in several countries and therefore considered as a pest or a noxious species in those areas (3). |

Triploid oysters Crassllstrea gigas were: produced in 1990 by treating fertilized eggs with cytochalasin B (CS). Triploids, treated diploids, and controls were deployed early 1991 in a high carrying capacity ecosystem on the Eastern Coast of Normandy (France). A monthly monitoring in 1992 showed that triploids yielded significantly higher growth rate and biochemical composition. However, growth was more heterogeneous. No evidence was found for a length or weight bimodal frequency distribution within triploid groups after a 26 months rearing cycle. Triploids showed retardation of gametogenesis. Carbohydrates content in triploids remained almost constant (40%) from June to September. Their survival rates were significantly lower than controls. Moreover... |

This study presents the zootechnical performances in their natural habitat, the Marennes Oléron Bay, of two Crassostrea gigas and Crassostrea angulata taxons of European and Asian origin, as well as those of their "European" hybrids (6 studied strains). Growth performance seems to be a phenotypic characterisation linked with the maternal origin (c. gigas or C. angulata). The Asian "pure gigas" or "pure angulata" strains' growth performances differ more from those of their European "sisters" than the European taxons with their hybrids. The C. angulata strain, of Taiwanese origin, does not survive the second culture week in the Marennes Oléron Bay. The C. angulata strain seems to "carry" a strong mortality potential. |

In the context of global change, increasing mariculture production has raised particular concerns regarding its environmental impact and sustainability. Molluscs and particularly blue mussel account for a significant part of this total production. Although blue mussels are considered as pretty resilient to environmental disturbances, we report in this study an unprecedented mussel mortality event that occurred during the winter 2014 in the Breton Sound. 9000 metric tonnes of mussels were lost and mortality rates up to 100% were recorded at some farming areas. Through a coupling approach, the present work aimed to better understand the potential environmental drivers associated to those mortalities. Firstly we analysed long-term in situ and satellite data... |
